The Quarterly — № 42 Spring 2026 · p.18
The long, quiet return of slow software.
After a decade of dopamine-optimized interfaces, a small cohort of builders is redesigning everyday tools to be slower, deeper, and less grabby. We spoke to five of them.
There is a particular sound that an older Mac makes when it is thinking — a slow, mechanical shuffle that announces, without shame, that the computer is working on your behalf. It is a sound most of us stopped hearing in 2012, when solid-state drives became common and our machines learned to pretend that every task was instant. The shift was celebrated at the time. It felt like progress. But a small group of software designers now argue that something was lost in the transition.
"A fast interface is not the same as a thoughtful one. We conflated the two and paid for it."

01.

The problem, first.

For ten years, every team we met told us the same thing — and kept doing it the old way anyway.

02.

A small experiment.

We built a prototype over a weekend. It answered three of our questions and created six new ones.

03.

It worked.

Our first customer renewed before the free trial ended. Our second tried to buy the company.

04.

Now you're here.

Which is either a coincidence, or it means you were looking for something like this. We'd bet on the second.
